Here, student can do school Homework during gameplay

Turn student homework into a funny task using exciting digital games that can be customised according to school curriculum.

What is FunHomework?

FunHomework is a game-based learning platform that makes exciting games more dynamic and customisable according to school curriculum. With the help of an authoring tool app, teachers will be able to integrate their own activities into games and make them available for their students.

Why FunHomework?

Most of learning games are not fully compatible with school curriculum and teacher’s objectives. Generally, they also do not provide any assessment or evaluation for student’s performance. FunHomework provides for teachers a simple and easy tool to manage students’ activities and evaluate their performance, and for students an encouraging learning environment to submit their homework/activities results.

How it works?

FunHomework in 3 Simple Steps

The platform is intended to ease the adoption of games in classrooms, so getting FunHomework to work takes only 3 steps

Create Homework Activity

The teacher uses TutorApp to create groups for students depending on their age/class or depending on the school subject. After that the teacher can create homework activity for students. Here, the individual questions of the activity that students need to solve are set. For each question, the ideal answers and mark weights should be provided in order to evaluate the task upon completion. In addition, a deadline for the activity can be set as well after which the homework will not be available for students.

Play & Solve

For Students, they need first to join the group created by their teacher in order to receive the activities assigned for them. Then students can use the game to pick the homework activity created by their teacher. During gameplay the student is prompted to solve problems included in the activity, here, an answer to the question need to be provided in order to proceed. Upon completion, the final result will be displayed including right and wrong answers evaluated against ideal answers provided by the teacher. The result will then be sent back to TutorApp.

Student Result

Once the student is done playing the game by solving activity problems, the result will be sent back to TutorApp. The teacher will receive a notification for each students try, and will be able to view students results individually. The result report contains the student answer for each of the activity questions, and the points he/she managed to collect depending on the rights answers and the time needed to complete the task. The report can then be exported to a PDF file to be printed and used for evaluation.

Research

FunHomework is part of a PhD research at the University of Twente that intends to enhance the utilisation of serious games in formal education. The platform is a result of a continuing project that aims at easing the integration of games into everyday classroom practice by overcoming the obstacles that hinder teacher’s adoption of game-based learning.

Mohammad gained his Master’s degree in Computer Science from Amman Arab University in 2006. After that he worked for 6 years as a computer science lecturer at Al-Qassim University. Beside his research duites, Mohammad is currently working as an Android developer.

My name is Mohammad Assaf and I’m an external PhD researcher at the University of Twente – department of Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems (IEBIS). My points of interest are serious games and game-based learning. In my research, I’m exploring innovative ideas that enhance the implementation of digital games in school environment. My passion about computer games drives me to explore the advantages that games can bring to education, and the valuable characteristics that can stimulate learners.

I beleive that the kids who grown up with the internet being a huge part of their lives are the most tech-savvy generation yet. This has greatly affected the way they learn in the classroom, therefore, instead of trying to separate kids from the technology that is such a huge part of their lives, we should learn to embrace high-tech methods of education, such as educational video games and game-based learning. By stepping away from the traditional lecture and teaching methods of decades past, teachers can allow their students to benefit from high-interest, interactive games to improve cognitive functions like memory and reasoning, and develop social and soft skills crucial for healthy social development.

FunHomework, culminates years of my research in this area that enables teachers to take advantage of the myriad constructive properties of games by facilitating their utilisation within formal settings.
