Study Title: Enhancing Game-based Learning Utilization in Primary Schools With Dynamic Serious Games.

Principal Investigator: Mohammad Assaf, Doctoral Candidate, University of Twente

Dear Potential Study Participant,
I am inviting you to participate in a case study discussing teachers’ attitudes about inclusion of dynamic serious games in primary education. Teachers who are invited to participate in this case study must: 1) be a primary school teacher and 2) currently teaching at least 1 subject. The participation in this case study is voluntary. Furthermore, the participation is anonymous.

Study’s Purpose: The purpose of this case study is to examine the ability of serious games with dynamic learning contents to enhance the utilization of game-based learning in formal primary education.

Research Questions: The following research questions will guide the study:

• What are the attitudes of teachers using serious games with dynamic learning contents inside formal education classrooms?

• How do teachers describe the usability of serious games with dynamic learning contents within the educational process?

• How do teachers describe the influence of using serious games with dynamic learning contents on their decision of adopting game-based learning?

Procedures: The case study will be run over a school academic semester. During the study, teachers and their students will be using FunHomework which is composed of a mobile app for teachers (TutorApp) and a mobile game for students (Pencil Knight). With the game-based learning framework students will learn while having fun with the Pencil Knight game. Using TutorApp, teachers will have control over the learning contents of the student’s game and will be able to receive students’ results for evaluation. The goal of this case study is to evaluate the applicability, effectiveness, and efficiency of FunHomework framework from teachers perspective against the research questions.

Confidentiality: Confidentiality of all participants will be protected in compliance with the University of Twente’s research policies and procedures. Names of the participants will not be recorded, nor identified through the study.

Compensation: No monetary or non-monetary compensation will be provided for your time or responses.

Questions: If you have any questions or concerns regarding this study and your participation, please do not hesitate to contact me, the researcher, via email at m.h.a.assaf@utwente.nl, or via WhatsApp at (+49) 17678969369.
